About

Joshua Wilwohl
Wilwohl has been a journalist since high school. He’s led administrations to the verge of collapse and has pushed the limits of “new media.” He is an editor/reporter at a major news organization in the New York City area. While working on his master’s degree, he co-founded The Klaxon.com, an online news organization that offers commentary and analysis on emergencies and disasters around the globe. The site began as a master’s thesis to operate an emergency news-gathering blog completely on handheld devices from anywhere in the world. The result was a success and the site became a popular hot spot for disaster enthusiasts. Wilwohl graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art history and journalism from Mercyhurst College in May 2008. After graduation, he worked as a copy editor at The New Jersey Herald and then at New Jersey Local News Service, part of The Star-Ledger Special Sections. During undergrad, Wilwohl was editor-in-chief of The Merciad, the college’s newspaper, where he transformed the paper’s format, moved it online and took a more investigative journalism approach to the news. The changes led the newspaper to take the prize as one of the top 10, tabloid college newspapers in the country. During his time at Mercyhurst, Wilwohl also interned for The Erie Times-News in Erie, Pa., and The Citizen in Pittsburgh. He has been a speaker at Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Columbia University, on newspaper design, writing, handheld journalism and “new media.” He has a master’s degree in emergency and disaster management and is the author of “All the News that Fits in Your Pocket,” a book about the future of journalism. Wilwohl also has been featured on BBC World Service and is well-versed in Italian. To contact Wilwohl, e-mail josh@handheldjournalism.com.

Info

Introduction / Newspapers today are dying. In fact, the death rattle of all print media distinctly is audible as newsrooms quickly are turning into funeral homes. Journalism is morphing from a brick-and-mortar environment to a handheld phenomenon. Netbooks, iPhones, BlackBerry and other handheld devices are where all of the world's major stories are breaking.
